Construction Staging
A preliminary construction staging must be conducted in order to identify any issues that may impact the project during the construction phasing. For example, excessive closures of the intersection must be avoided in order to reduce traffic and community impacts. Additionally, construction staging provides information to contractors necessary to obtain sensible bids.
The first step in developing a construction staging is assessing the current conditions of the project site. Currently, there are a few items that must be addressed before beginning construction. First, the project site has power pole lines located on the East that will impede construction, thus, the power poles need to be removed and relocated. There are two high pressure gas lines located on the northwest side of Keller Road. Lastly, there are water pipelines that are found on the South side of Keller Road, and run underneath the I-215. Once these utility items have been addressed, the first stage of construction may begin.
Stage 1
The goal of the first stage is to address the I-215 bridge and Keller Road. During this stage, the bridge’s side slopes will be upgraded to vertical retaining walls to create more room. Keller Road will then be expanded by two lanes on each side during this stage as well. Temporary railings (Type K) will be placed on the east and west side of the existing lane, thus, allowing traffic to continue to flow through the existing two lanes on Keller Road.
Stage 2
During the second stage, the construction of new ramps will begin. At this time, traffic will be moved from the existing two lanes on Keller Road to the newly constructed eastbound and westbound lanes on Keller Road.
Stage 3
The final construction stage consists of regrading the middle section of Keller Road to match the newly constructed lanes. Once the new ramps are completed, they will be open up to traffic once it is safe to do so.
