Two different partial clover interchange designs were designed by the Geometric team. However, both designs were eliminated because of failing traffic analyses conducted by the Traffic team, as explained below. The configurations are as shown.

Partial Cloverleaf Interchanges

Traffic Analysis

Two different partial cloverleaf interchange configurations were designed by the team and analyzed in Synchro 9. Synchro analyzed the Level of Service (LOS) at each intersection using HCM methodology and presented the LOS at the northbound and southbound intersections for both AM and PM peak hours for each of the two designs. However, because of the driveway being constructed leading into the medical facility (Kaiser Driveway) to the east of the northbound ramp intersections, space constraints became an issue. Space was limited due to Kaiser Driveway and the eastern adjacent local road, Mapleton Avenue, where proper spacing between all three intersections including the northbound ramp was not ideal nor feasible. Thus, the northbound off-ramp was aligned with Kaiser Driveway. This caused poor traffic flow for traffic exiting at the off-ramp and for traffic at Kaiser Driveway, and thus produced levels of service that were inadequate.

Viability

Both configurations for the Partial Cloverleaf Interchange design failed the traffic analysis step. Therefore, they were both rejected and eliminated from the list of viable alternative interchange designs.
